Lucida AI Closes GBP 5.3m Seed Round for Speech-to-Speech Language Coaching

Lucida AI, the speech-to-speech AI language coaching platform, has closed a GBP 5.3m (USD 7m) seed round led by Velocity Capital, with Next Tier Ventures, Look AI Ventures, Boğaziçi Ventures, Yapı Kredi Frwrd Ventures, and Ünlü & Co participating.

The London-headquartered AI startup will use the new capital for geographic expansion, further development of its proprietary speech infrastructure, and the global scale-up of its enterprise offering.

Founded in 2024 in Istanbul by Mustafa Girgin and Mustafa Sait Demirci, the raise follows a GBP 1m (USD 1.25m) pre-seed round led by Turkey’s Neo Asset Management, bringing Lucida AI’s total funding to GBP 6.3m (USD 8.3m).

A speech-native platform for white-collar professionals

Lucida AI was built around the layer in language learning of spoken fluency under real conversational pressure, not grammar or vocabulary. The platform pairs a proprietary Speech Language Model (SLM) with the company’s over 200 AI avatars that coach users through scenario-based dialogues, ranging from ordering coffee to high-stakes client calls.

The platform encourages users to speak out loud again and again, with no grammar drills, multiple-choice questions, or scripted exercises. Users speak, the model adapts to their level in real time, and the system returns instant feedback on pronunciation, fluency, and clarity.

The product is positioned as a speaking tool for intermediate and advanced users, and not a beginner’s app. It is split across two tracks:

  • The consumer side is a mobile app for individual learners.
  • The enterprise tier extends the same model into corporate language programs with on-premises deployment and end-to-end encryption for organizations whose data cannot leave their own environment.

In the 15 months since launch, Lucida AI has scaled to more than 3 million users across Europe, the United States, and emerging markets, logged 2.2 billion minutes of spoken interaction, and crossed into seven-figure annual recurring revenue (ARR), per investor commentary.

Speech-first learning in a text-first market

Lucida AI sits at the intersection of two crowded markets, consumer language apps such as Duolingo and Babbel, and pronunciation-focused tools like ELSA Speak. It is one of a small group of well-funded speech-native AI startups positioning speaking practice as the product rather than a premium feature.

The digital language learning market is estimated to be worth $16.8 billion in 2026 and is expected to grow to $52 billion by 2032, with an annual growth rate of 20.6%, according to Research and Markets.

The scale gap against incumbents is wide. Duolingo was valued at USD 6.15bn in June 2026; Babbel and Pimsleur remain dominant consumer mind-share holders. Lucida AI’s user base, minutes of spoken interaction and ARR put it on a credible category-defining track within the speech-first segment, even against the incumbent text-first giants.

The enterprise track is where the differentiation is sharpest. On-premises deployment and end-to-end encryption are the company’s answer to data-sovereignty buyers in financial services, defense, and regulated industries. These buyers cannot use cloud-only consumer apps to train their staff.

Look AI Ventures Partner and Chief Investment Officer Angelo Burgarello framed their investment on that distinction: Lucida AI “is building a speech-native learning platform with real-time conversation and a phonetic engine that provides more accurate pronunciation feedback than generic AI tutors.”

High growth, capital efficiency and international reach

Over the next 2–3 years, Lucida AI’s biggest growth opportunity is in regions with large populations of white-collar professionals and multinational companies, particularly Europe and Latin America.

AI startups like Lucida AI are succeeding in addressing these markets by building small, highly capable teams empowered by AI and focusing on product excellence and hypergrowth.

“Lucida AI possesses the characteristics of the types of businesses that the Velocity EIS Technology Fund looks to invest in: a strong management team; capital efficiency; data-driven; international application; significant growth in a growing market, with a broad and mixed customer base,” said Thomas Lindup, COO at lead-investor Velocity Capital.
